Our Word of the Week: Threshold

Threshold

Threshold – We all know the tradition. The groom carries his bride across the threshold of their new home. When he does this, he’s bringing her symbolically into his house to start their partnership. The threshold has the symbolic importance of being the point of entry into the home. What is a threshold, actually? Literally the groom has carried his new bride over a strip wood, metal or stone that is nearly flush the floor beneath a door. The threshold covers the joint where two different types of floor material meet. It can be flush with the floor or slightly raised. The threshold of an exterior door is also used for protection from the weather. It is shaped to slope away from the interior so as to drain away water and prevent it from coming inside. It also may have some sort of interlocking shape to engage with weather-stripping on the bottom of the door to make the door more weather and air tight.
